SOYGOM - Syriac Orthodox Youth Group of Melbourne

One year later.

The following is an article as published in Issue 14 (March - April 2003) of Meltho.

It has been just over a year since several young members of our church got together and decided to form a group for the Syriac Orthodox youth of Melbourne.  Although the past year has been quite a challenge, we have overcome several difficulties and are pleased and excited to see that the group is gaining a wider acceptance among our community and that more and more people are coming to the events that we have organised.  In addition, we were blessed to meet with H.H. Mor Ignatius Zakka I during his recent visit, at which he expressed his approval of our group and our mission.

We ended 2002 with a get together at St. Yacoub’s Church on a lovely warm day for a game of cricket, fish and chips and a discussion with Rev. Fr. Aphrem about Christmas, fasting and prayer.  Following this discussion a meeting was held with all that were present and it was agreed that it was time to go ahead with our plans to elect a committee to oversee the group.

Three weeks later the nine nominees forming the inaugural SOYGOM Committee held our first meeting, blessed by V. Rev. Fr. Iskander.  The committee consists of: Ephraim Mrad (president), Nadia Massa (vice-president), Mayada Matti (treasurer), Saideh Mrad (secretary), George Massa, Sima Aphram, Christine Massa and Isaac Melle (Committee coordinators).  If you have any suggestions, ideas or complaints please contact us in person, by e-mail (soygom@hotmail.com) or through our website (www.soygom.freeservers.com).

Our first event for 2003, was a trip to Edithvale beach on 19th January, a perfect day for the beach, made even better by the great turnout of our youth.  This was followed by a movie night a couple weeks later at Southbank, where everyone had a laugh watching I Spy.  Once again it was great to see so many people come along and enjoy each others company.

The first event organised the SOYGOM was a free BBQ a year ago, so to celebrate the groups birthday we decided to make it an annual event to be held on the last Sunday before Lent.  We were both glad and surprised to see so many people brave the cold weather and rain to come to Bundoora Park for the BBQ.  But after a couple of hours it all got too much so we headed back to St. Aphrem’s Church where we had a few exciting games of volleyball.

We plan to have many more social and sporting events in 2003, as well as regular spiritual / cultural education functions.  Please feel free to contact us if you would like to be more involved in the group.  Everybody is welcome to attend the committee meetings, which are held on the first Tuesday of each month.  For all the latest news and information about the group or upcoming events visit our website:
