The following is an article as published in issue 11 (Sep-Oct 2002) of Meltho.

On Saturday 13^th July SOYGOM held its first ever party at Westmeadows Hall. The night was full of music, dancing, food and most importantly people. It was great to see so many of our youth together catching up with old friends as well as making new ones throughout the night.

    It was uplifting to see many new faces that hadn’t been to our earlier events enjoying the night and showing their appreciation for the group, some even wanting to become actively involved. We hope that these faces will become familiar as they continue to come to our future events. The Syriac Orthodox Youth Group of Melbourne is run for and by the Syriac Orthodox Youth of Melbourne, so it was great to see everybody help out in making the night such a great success.

    During the night we were blessed by the appearance of Father Iskander and Father Afrem, who expressed their joy at seeing the Syriac Orthodox youth together. The support shown to the group by the church has been tremendous and we hope that we can continue to work together for the youth of the church.

    Following the success of the party a dinner was organised for Saturday 24^th August at The Old Pepper Restaurant in South Yarra. Our booking for 30 seriously underestimated the group’s popularity. Once again it was great to see so many youth from our community having a good time together.

    We plan to have regular events, every one or two months, at which the Syriac Orthodox Youth can get together, catch up and meet new people from our community. There have been many exciting suggestions for upcoming events, but in order to make them a success we need you, the youth, to come along. Please e-mail us any suggestions or ideas that you have on how SOYGOM can be improved.
