On Tuesday 13th August 2002 all members of SOYGOM were invited to a meeting held at St. Aphrem's church to discuss the future of the group. Below is a summary of the meeting. Members in attendance : 13 1) What has SOYGOM achieved so far: | In 6 months we have established a group for the Syriac Orthodox youth of Melbourne and are beginning to gain recognition throughout the community. | | Our first event (BBQ) was quite successful with almost 40 people turning up. This was followed up by a less successful bowling night, due to a lack of organisation. | | Around 60 people showed up to our last event, the party in Westmeadows. The general consensus was that it was a good night for our first party and we need to continue having regular events for the Syriac Orthodox youth of Melbourne. |
2) Member’s Opinions | The general consensus among the members at the meeting was that so far we’re doing well, quite a few people know about the group and what the group is about, we now need to try and get more people involved and organise events to which they will come. |
3) Amendments and other proposals. | It was decided that the Syriac Orthodox Youth Group of Melbourne (SOYGOM) should be registered as an association in order to receive legal rights and any possible benefits and support from the government. | | The majority of members present at the meeting voted to widen the age restriction imposed on SOYGOM members to anybody between approximately 16 and 28 years. | | Members are to consider the proposed amendment to the committee structure so that a final committee structure can be decided on prior to the inaugural SOYGOM committee elections to be held in early 2003 |
4) Next Event | Details of the next event are to be announced shortly. Dinner – 8pm Saturday 24th August, The Old Pepper Restaurant, 363 Chapel St. South Yarra. |
5) Where to from here? | Plan to have an event every one to two months (more over Summer) | | Patriarch arriving Saturday 28th September, he will be here for one week. We would like to be able to meet with him for a short while and hopefully even organise a discussion with him and all the youth. | | In addition to the events listed below, the group should attempt to organise and get the members involved in certain spiritual events, such as English masses, discussions with priests and other religious leaders within our community. | | Suggestions for future events include: - Zone 3 and/or Skirmish - Ice skating - Movie night - Karaoke night - Sports & activities day: early December, probably at Mor Yacoub - Day Trips: to beach and other places in January / February - Camp: early February |
