SOYGOM - Syriac Orthodox Youth Group of Melbourne

Mission

The Syriac Orthodox Youth Group of Melbourne aims to unite the youth of the Syriac Orthodox Church in Melbourne, so as to support them, socially and spiritually, as they progress through their teenage years into adulthood.

We hope that through SOYGOM, our members will get to know and interact with other people of a similar age, culture, religion and background, thus remaining in contact with and strengthening our church, our traditions and our community for future generations.

Values

As implied by the group’s name, the Syriac Orthodox Youth Group of Melbourne, is part of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch and all the East, accordingly, our values are based on the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Church.

Membership

Membership of the group is open to all youth (approximately 16 to 30 years old) who agree to and support the group’s mission and values, regardless of race or gender.  To become a member simply send us an e-mail with your name, address and date of birth.

Committee

The SOYGOM Committee directs and controls the everyday running of SOYGOM, it is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the group and developing it so that it will continue as intended for future generations.

The duties of the committee members include:

bulletEnsuring that the group remains focused on both its short and long term goals.
bulletScheduling regular group meetings to discuss the progress and development of the group.
bulletReporting to and seeking the approval of spiritual leaders and the local parishes of any progress, developments or decisions made by the group.
bulletKeeping balance of and maintaining the group’s operating costs and finances.
bulletKeeping members informed of any decisions and progress made by the group.
bulletForming and overseeing subcommittees to plan and run events and activities for members of the group; ensuring that these are accomplished successfully, on time and on budget.

The committee consists of at least 4 Syriac Orthodox members aged between 17 and 26 years at the time of their election. Ideally, there should be an equal representation of male and female members and of each Syriac Orthodox parishes in Melbourne. The members of the committee nominated to represent the group, will elect from among themselves a president, a secretary and a treasurer, in addition to any other suitable positions, operating under the spiritual leadership of the His Holiness Patriarch of the Syrian Orthodox Church or his appointed representative.

All members of the committee have equal rights and control of the group, members of SOYGOM may not take any action on behalf of the group without the approval of the majority of the committee members.

Elections are to be held every 24 months, in which all SOYGOM members are encouraged to nominate for fellow members to fill the positions of the committee.
